This September, we are thrilled to recognize Melanie Lutz as our Volunteer of the Month!
Originally from Quarryville in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Melanie spent most of her life in Lancaster before joining our community here in Sumter County. Her lifelong love for cats began at the tender age of two when she welcomed her very first kitten—and that affection never wavered. Over the years, Melanie has shared her home with many feline companions and with her husband Greg, continues to care for two beloved rescue cats today: Lacy and Julie.
Lacy, a gentle 10-year-old yellow tabby, is Melanie’s nighttime snuggle buddy and still delights in playing with her toys. Julie, a 6-year-old Bengal, is a social butterfly who loves watching birds and squirrels from the window and greeting guests with her signature loud purrs. It’s clear that Melanie’s home is filled with love, warmth, and the happy hum of contented kitties.
At the shelter’s off-site adoption showcase at PetSmart, Melanie shines in her role providing one-on-one care and comfort to our cats. Her calm presence and gentle affection help each kitty feel safe, loved, and ready to transition to their forever homes. Melanie finds deep joy in watching cats adjust to their new surroundings and blossom into adoptable companions. She especially remembers one particular cat at PetSmart who was initially fearful, but after patient visits and quiet bonding time, this cat began to trust, opened up and eventually found a loving home.
While Melanie’s role focuses on providing direct companionship to the cats rather than interacting with the public, her contributions are immeasurable. Her dedication to cuddling, comforting, and connecting with our shelter cats helps lay the emotional foundation they need to thrive.
Melanie, thank you for your compassion, commitment, and the heartfelt care you bring to each of your volunteer shifts. You truly embody the spirit of the Humane Society of Sumter County, and we are so grateful to have you as part of our team. Congratulations Melanie on being our September 2025 Volunteer of the Month!
