Surrender a Dog
By surrendering your dog to Humane Society of Sumter County, you’re ensuring they receive the best care possible while we work to find them a new loving home. Our staff is experienced and dedicated to the well-being of every animal that comes through our doors. From providing medical care to offering enrichment activities, we ensure that surrendered dogs remain happy and healthy while they await their next chapter.
How the Process Works
Fill Out the Surrender Form
To begin the surrender process, please complete the form with as much detail as possible. We ask for information about your dog’s medical history, temperament, and routine so that we can provide the best possible care during their stay.
This information also helps us match your dog with the right family or individual.
Be Transparent About Your Dog’s Needs
The more we know about your dog, the better we can help them transition into a new home. Whether your dog has special medical needs, behavioral challenges, or unique personality traits, it’s important to share this information with us.
This ensures we can provide appropriate care and find a home that meets your dog’s needs.
Meet with Our Team
Once we receive your form, a member of our team will reach out to discuss the next steps. Depending on our shelter capacity and your dog’s needs, we may set up an appointment for you to bring your dog in for evaluation.
During this meeting, we’ll review your dog’s history and any other important details that will help us provide the best care.
Before You Surrender
We understand that surrendering a dog is not an easy choice, and we encourage owners to explore all possible alternatives before making this decision.
If your circumstances allow, consider options like temporary foster care, reaching out to friends or family, or rehoming your dog yourself. Our team is also happy to offer advice or resources that may help you keep your dog.
