Dog Adoption Process and Fees
At Humane Society of Sumter County, we’re committed to helping every dog find a loving home. Below is a step-by-step guide to our adoption process, along with information on adoption fees and everything included in your new pet’s care.
Why do shelters have adoption fees?
Adoption fees help cover the cost of daily care, medical treatments, and preparations that ensure every dog is healthy and ready for their forever home.
Your adoption fee contributes to vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and other important treatments.

The Adoption Process
Meet the Requirements
Adopters must be at least 21 years old.
Browse Our Adoptable Pets
You can view adoptable dogs on our website or visit us in person at Humane Society of Sumter County in Lake Panasoffkee.
Complete the Adoption Application
Fill out the online Dog Adoption Application form.
Set Up a Meet & Greet
Once your application is approved, we’ll schedule a meet & greet with the dog you’re interested in.
If you have existing pets, a meet & greet will also be arranged to ensure compatibility.
Finalize the Adoption
Be sure to bring the following: Driver’s license (or FL ID card) with your current address. A pet carrier for all cats, kittens, or small dogs.
Accepted payment types: Cash, check, Visa, AMEX, MasterCard, or Discover.
Take Your New Friend Home!
If the dog is already spayed or neutered, they’ll go home with you the same day.
If not, arrangements will be made to have the procedure completed at our veterinarian’s office before they can join you.
Pet Adoption Returns
We work hard to ensure all adopted animals are healthy and sound, but sometimes unexpected health issues can arise. If your new pet becomes ill, you have two options:
- Return the pet to Humane Society of Sumter County, or
- Have the pet treated at your expense by your veterinarian.
Should you need to return the pet for any reason, we’ll accept them back—no questions asked. However, no refunds will be issued, as adoption fees are considered donations to support the care of other animals.
