WAIT…WHAT JUST HAPPENED?
For nine whole years, life was purr-fect. I had endless cuddles, warm laps, and gentle words that filled my days. I knew the sound of mom’s footsteps, the smell of her coffee, and the quiet way she’d smile when I curled up beside her. I was her shadow, her black beauty, and I never once worried about anything – except maybe when she was late with my dinner.
But then, everything started to change. Boxes appeared, furniture disappeared, and suddenly we were in a whole new place. I was still trying to learn the corners of this strange house when Mom got sick. I visited her, but it wasn’t the same-her bed wasn’t ours, her voice wasn’t always strong, and I didn’t understand why she couldn’t come back home to be with me.
Then one day, not long after she got sick, my mom suddenly passed away. My whole world tilted, and I lost the only person I’d ever truly known. I’m just a cat, and I can’t make sense of it the way humans do. I only knew that the arms that had held me tight were gone forever, and I was alone in a world that felt too big.
FINDING MY PAWS AGAIN
Now I live at the Humane Society of Sumter County. It’s not my old home, and I still look around sometimes expecting Mom to walk in, but the volunteers here are so good to me. They give me sweet words, gentle strokes, and most importantly, treats. And between you and me, I’m not above stepping in to claim any that the other cats don’t notice. Hey – this boy’s not skipping a meal.
I’m a very good boy. I don’t scratch furniture-can’t even if I wanted to, since I was declawed a long time ago. I sit back quietly most of the time, watching everything with my big, thoughtful eyes. People think I’m shy, but really, I’m just…cautious. I’ve had so many changes that I’m still figuring out where I belong.
Every day I learn something new about this place. I’ve discovered that laps are still warm here, that hands still find the soft spot under my chin, and that sometimes, even when your whole world changes, kindness has a way of finding you again.
FROM YESTERDAY’S SHADOW, TO TOMORROW’S LIGHT
I’ll admit it: I miss my mom. I’ll always miss her. But she wouldn’t want me to give up, and I know she’d want me to find someone new to love. Someone who’ll appreciate that I’m a gentle, laid-back guy with years of love left to give. I may sit back at first, but once the treats are out-or better yet, once you scratch my chin-you’ll see how ready I am to connect with people again.
I dream of a home where I can curl up beside someone, just like I used to. A window to watch the world, a soft bed to share, and a human who understands that I’ve been through a lot but still have so much love in me. I don’t ask for much-just someone who will let me be their shadow once again.
So here I am, Halligan, waiting with a sheepish little hope in my heart. I’ve learned to appreciate the kindness of today, even while I treasure the love of yesterday. And I’m holding out for tomorrow – maybe tomorrow – I’ll find my new mom or dad. Could that be you?
Halligan is currently available for adoption while he resides in foster care. His foster parent says he is sweet and enjoyable to live with. It took Halligan a little while to come out of his shell, but since his time in the home, he enjoys lounging on the couch, playing with toys, and being petted.
If you’d like to schedule a meet-and-greet with Halligan, complete an adoption application to be contacted by an Adoption Counselor.
