Pet Tales: Maggie’s Story

WHAT’S THAT BARN DOING HERE?

Hi there! I’m Maggie – a ten-month-old, almost 8-pound tuxedo girl with whiskers that never stop twitching! I’m curious about everything. Once upon a time, I was a soon-to-be mama with nowhere safe to go. I wandered until I found an old barn tucked away from all the busy humans coming and going. It was quiet, cozy, and just perfect for a little family like mine. So that’s where I had my babies – in that secret barn.

Then one day, a man named Mike showed up. He spotted me peeking out and realized I had kittens with me. Before I knew it, he called someone for help, and my family and I were carried to safety inside, away from the heat and cold. Little did I know that the barn I had chosen was right on the grounds of the Humane Society of Sumter County! I guess I picked the perfect spot. The Universe must’ve given me a little nudge in the right direction. We were taken to the vet, and I was given my vaccines and as my babies grew, they got their vaccines too.

We were all taken to a foster home, where I could rest and care for my babies without worry.

ALWAYS WATCHING, ALWAYS LOVING

My foster mom, Jo Ann, says I’m a wonderful mama. I keep my babies close-always in sight, always counted. If they wander too far, I give them a soft “mew-mew’ and they come scampering right back. I never claw or hiss-well, maybe I hissed a couple of times when Jo Ann’s cat came a little too close. A mama has to protect her babies-I take my job seriously!

These days, I’m learning how to relax. I was just spayed, so I’m taking it easy and soaking up all the soothing moments I missed while raising my babies. Jo Ann tells me I’m gentle, sweet, and so grateful-and she’s right, because every day I look at her and think, “Thank you for saving us.” When I rub against her legs, that’s my way of saying “You’re my person-at least until my permanent one comes along.”

WHO’S WATCHING WHO?

I’m not really a lap cat (I’ve been too busy for that), but I love being close. If I hear someone move, I’m instantly on alert-ears up, tail twitching! I’ll hop onto the back of the couch or perch on a windowsill where I can see everything. When Jo Ann or the kids walk by, I just have to watch what they’re doing. I don’t want to miss a thing! Who knows, there might be a goodie nearby.

Even though I’m a mama, I still have that kitten curiosity that makes life fun. I’ll sit next to you, quietly keeping you company, my bright eyes taking it all in. What can I say? I’m a people watcher with a heart full of love. I’m ready now for a safe and happy forever home where I can keep watch over those I love.
