We are so happy to acknowledge and celebrate Leigh Ebersole as our February Volunteer of the Month!
The Humane Society of Sumter County is proud to recognize Leigh Ebersole as our Volunteer of the Month for February 2026. Originally from Rochester, New York, Leigh grew up in a home filled with both cats and dogs. Today, she shares her home with Matilda, her fun – loving five year old Golden Retriever who adores water in all its forms, pools, puddles, and even rain. When Matilda isn’t splashing around, she enjoys digging holes, playing with her daycare friends, chewing ice, and curling up on Leigh’s lap.
Leigh says her inspiration to volunteer comes from wanting to give kittens and cats the love, attention, and socialization they need before finding their forever homes. She also wants the community to understand how vital public support is: “People don’t realize the Humane Society of Sumter County is funded entirely by donations,” she says. “I encourage everyone to come visit the shelter and see the difference their help can make.”

Twice a week, Leigh spends her time cleaning Catty Shack, home to older adult cats. The cleaning takes about an hour – but the joy comes afterward, when she stays to play with the cats as long as she likes. Leigh also reminds the community that there are many ways to volunteer. “You don’t have to volunteer directly with the animals,” she shares. “You can help with fundraising events, maintenance, the IT site, grant writing, laundry, or donations.” For those who can’t volunteer in person, Leigh recommends checking out HSSPCA’s Amazon and Chewy wish lists.
One of Leigh’s most cherished moments as a volunteer involves her favorite cat, Otis. She wells up when she tells the story: Otis walked right up to her one day and settled onto her lap without any hesitation. “Otis is the cutest, chunkiest thing I’ve ever seen,” she laughs. Though he sometimes shows his affection with a playful, unprompted smack, Leigh believes it’s because he longs for a home of his own – one without other cats, since he’s afraid of them. She admits she’ll “cry like a baby” when the right person finally adopts him.
Leigh’s dedication goes far beyond her scheduled shifts. She frequently fills in for other volunteers who travel north for the summer, ensuring every kitten and cat continues to receive the care they so richly deserve.
The Humane Society of Sumter County extends its heartfelt thanks to Leigh Ebersole for her compassion, reliability, and the joy she brings to our feline residents. We celebrate her this month – and always.
