In the spirit of dedication, resilience, and selflessness, the Humane Society of Sumter County is proud to recognize Pat Diss as our Volunteer of the Month for December 2024. Pat’s journey through life has been one of hard work, love, and a deep commitment to those in need—qualities that shine through in her volunteer work with us.
Raised on Long Island, New York, Pat’s life has been full of diverse roles and experiences. From a dedicated employee at Ford to a wife, mother, and grandmother, Pat has embraced each chapter with passion and determination. Her career took her to owning and managing a 34-stall horse farm for 23 years, where she specialized in training, boarding, and rehabilitation, a testament to her incredible work ethic and love for animals.
After relocating to Florida, Pat found herself with more time on her hands and soon discovered the Humane Society of Sumter County just 11 miles from her new home. There, she found her “happy place”—a sanctuary where she could pour her energy and love into helping animals in need. Pat chose to take on the laundry duties, a task that, while never-ending, became her way of contributing in a meaningful and consistent manner. Whether folding blankets or washing towels, Pat tackles every chore with care and commitment, always ensuring that the animals receive the best possible care. She has also contributed to the shelter’s successful participation in the local Junk in the Trunk events raising much needed funds with the sales of surplus supplies. Pat’s energy seems endless as she exhausts younger volunteers when a task is at hand.
Pat’s outlook on life—what she calls her “journey”—is one of giving back, staying active, and connecting with others. As she reflects, “As a senior citizen, it’s time to give back. You will have a purpose, you’ll keep fit, your mind will be more alert, and you’ll make many friendships with both people and pets. This is an opportunity.” Her words resonate with all who know her, and her kindness is felt by both the staff, fellow volunteers, and the animals she serves.
In her personal life, Pat is accompanied by two beloved companions: Peaches, her dog adopted from our shelter, is a superstar known throughout her entire community, and Samson, a deaf cat who requires extra care and patience but is steadily learning hand signals. Pat’s love for her pets is evident in the way she speaks so affectionately of them, and it’s clear that she brings the same level of devotion to her work at our Humane Society.
Pat’s journey continues to inspire all of us. Her selflessness, positive attitude, and unwavering support for the animals in our care make her a truly deserving recipient of our Volunteer of the Month this December. We are incredibly grateful for everything she does, the joy she shows in her volunteer work, and we look forward to continuing this journey with her on our team.
Congratulations, Pat! You are a shining example of what it means to give back and make the world a better place. In the season of giving, you are one of our best gifts.
