This January, we are thrilled to recognize Dana Marzolf as our Volunteer of the Month!
The Humane Society of Sumter County is proud to recognize Dana Marzolf as our Volunteer of the Month for January 2026. Originally from Grisham, Oregon, Dana has always shared his life with dogs. One of his fondest memories was of a small white poodle named Puffin, who adored Dana’s father and would eagerly wait beside his dad’s chair until Dana’s mom would open the door so Puffin could greet Dana’s father at the car each evening. That bond, Dana says, opened his eyes to just how deeply animals love their families. It was the beginning of a lifelong devotion to dogs.
Today, Dana and his family share their home with two very special companions. Molly, a nine-and-a-half-year-old Golden Retriever, has been by Dana’s side since she was eight weeks old. He credits her with helping him through one of the roughest times in his life, a true source of comfort and resilience. More recently, Dana welcomed Simba into their family after falling in love with him while volunteering at the shelter. At first, Simba didn’t know about rides in the truck or golf cart or the joy of chasing balls. With Molly’s patient guidance, Simba now loves it all-the rides, the games, and the bond of being part of a family.
Dana first came to the Humane Society of Sumter County through the encouragement of a friend who volunteered with the kittens and cats. Inspired, he filled out an application and began walking dogs. Since then, his dedication has been remarkable. He not only walks the dogs but also helps to teach them basic commands like sit, stay, and walk politely on a leash. He takes great pride in helping to prepare them for adoption, knowing these skills will help them find their forever homes faster. Dana is quick to tell new volunteers that they can give as much or as little time as they are able — but warns with a smile, “Expect to fall in love with them when you do.”
One of Dana’s most memorable moments as a volunteer was with a small dog named Dixie. Just before Christmas, Dana took her out to play in one of the yards. It was a chilly day. He lay down on the grass, and Dixie climbed up on his chest to snuggle close. Dana remembers thinking it would be wonderful if Dixie were adopted for Christmas. A few days later, Dana’s wish came true. Now Dixie is living her best life.
Volunteering at the Humane Society of Sumter County has become a labor of love for Dana. Beyond walking the dogs and giving them comfort, he helps bathe them, cleans their kennels, freshens their bedding, and makes sure they enjoy free time to stretch and socialize. To Dana, each adoption is nothing short of a miracle — watching a dog go from uncertain and scared to safe, loved, and then home. Dana believes it is a privilege to be part of that journey, and the animals are what keep his heart devoted to volunteering.
This month, we celebrate Dana Marzolf for all the love and devotion he brings to the animals and to the shelter.
