The impulse to care for animals in need just runs in some people’s blood. Literally. Take, for instance, our volunteer of the month, Kevin O.
Originally from a small town in Massachusetts, Kevin’s family is chock-full of animal lovers. “My dad was like the neighborhood animal paramedic, patching up injured and sick cats and dogs, and whatever else people would bring him. I just always kind of followed in his footsteps.”
And we are thrilled that those footsteps led this terrific volunteer right to our shelter! Not only do Kevin and his wife do a lot of doggy sitting (their Florida-based daughters boast a “menagerie of cats and dogs”), but in his spare time Kevin volunteers for our shelter. Whether it’s taking the dogs out for a walk or a run, or just playing with them and scratching their sweet faces, Kevin finds a way to inject a lot of love into each of his visits. Rather insightfully, Kevin makes a concerted effort to spend time with the dogs who have been at the shelter the longest, giving each and every senior pup the special attention they need.
One particular favorite experience Kevin recalls is the relationship he developed with a dog named Sadie. “She was the first dog I took out and was a handful. But she really grew on me!” And guess what? Like so many of our dogs, Sadie got adopted! Asked what inspires him the most during his work at the shelter, Kevin’s answer comes easily. It’s how happy the dogs are to see the volunteers! To spend time romping around the field with these kind-hearted folks who donate their time for such a vital cause. “Anyone who loves animals should get involved,” Kevin says. “You get back so much from just being around them.”
